New York Fashion Week: Steven Alan

Steven Alan, at first, reminded us of elementary school: boy-girl-boy-girl sequencing, picture-day appropriate outfits, and an early-for-us 9 a.m. showtime we were slightly dreading.

Skirts and dresses were neatly paired with socks and oxfords; hemlines hit either high on the thigh or midcalf. Pants stopped above the ankle. Silky tie-neck blouses, plaids peeking out from patterned sweaters, tailored blazers, and a very sophisticated wool jumpsuit left us feeling decidedly more grown-up.

New York Fashion Week: Steven Alan

Steven Alan’s spring collection makes us want to whip up some juleps, pack a picnic, and throw caution to the wind. Wistful yet practical, the 32 looks give new life to vintage textures and silhouettes. Light denim is reborn as boxy tees and midriff-baring tops; loose-waisted frocks come in gingham and delicate, cheeky prints (Are those baseball players?); slouchy separates get a pastel punch. Accessories are fun and functional (think straw hats, orange tasseled loafers, and cross-body purses), so you can stay stylish on the go. We’re already gearing up for a bon voyage.

Must-Have Ensemble:Annette jacket and Danny pant in black and white gingham.
Lust-After Accessory: Franklin bag in black with orange flap.
On the Soundtrack: Talk Talk’s Laughing Stock album.
