Screen Play: Sundance 2013 “Fruitvale”

The Gist:
A man is shot dead at the Fruitvale subway stop by BART cops on New Year’s Day 2009. That man was Oscar Grant. Though many recorded the actual act with their cell phones, writer/director Ryan Coogler’s day-before recount maps all of Grant’s doings, texts, and phone calls leading up to the fateful incident. And not an eye was dry when the credits rolled.

The Stars: Michael B. Jordan (Vince from Friday Night Lights), Octavia Spencer, Melonie Diaz, Kevin Durand, and Chad Michael Murray.

The Buzz: After its premiere, word spread like wildfire, positioning Ryan Coogler’s true-story directorial debut as a must-see. And trust us, it is (case in point: The Weinstein Company pounced on it for $2.5 million).
