Screen Play: Sundance 2013, It’s Jenny Lewis!
Singer/songwriter/DailyCandy favorite Jenny Lewis makes her debut as a film composer and music supervisor in Very Good Girls, starring Elizabeth Olsen and Dakota Fanning. More on the film later; for now, let’s get to know the songbird.
What’s your favorite candy?
What’s the most-played song on your iPod right now?
"Feels like We Only Go Backwards," by Tame Impala
Who are your favorite composers?
I love song-based scores like Harold and Maude and The Graduate.
What was the biggest challenge you faced with your composing debut?
Learning to support the emotion in the film rather than trying to dictate it.
Do you have any OCDs when it comes to music?
When I’m playing the bass live, I have to spin the pick several times just before the song starts. Really unsettling but necessary.
Did you work closely with the cast?
I worked with Lizzie Olsen, whose character is a young songwriter. We discussed the songs she would play in the film, and Todd, the guitar player from Jenny and Johnny, was her guitar teacher.
Is this your first trip to Sundance?
Have you gotten to see any films?
No films sadly.
Rub elbows with anyone who made you blush?
Name three items you can’t live without.
Burt’s Bees lip balm, Repetto for Opening Ceremony shoes, and Kusmi Tea.
If you could work with anyone — director, composer, singer — who would it be and why?
Alexander Payne (he’s from Omaha). And the Coen brothers, because they use music so well in their films.
We hear The Frankies Spuntino Kitchen Companion is one of your favorite things; what’s your favorite thing to cook?
Cacio e pepe
Describe your style in three words. Just off a horse.
